(сетевой адрес в Internet согласно протоколу IPv4) 4-байтовое (32-битовое) число в десятичном формате (четыре трёхзначных десятичных числа, разделённых точками), задающее уникальный номер хост-компьютера или другого сетевого устройства (см. IP Number). IP-адреса используются на сетевом (третьем) уровне и делятся на пять классов: А, В, С, D и Е. Каждому классу сетевых адресов выделяется определённое число адресов хост-узлов (см. RFC 1918 и таблицу).Класс А (с 0 по 7 разряд - идентификатор сети, остальные 24 разряда - идентификатор хоста) используется в основном в закрытых (т. е. не имеющих внешних подключений) частных сетях. Таким образом, он позволяет адресовать 126 идентификаторов сетей и 16 777 124 хоста.Класс В используется как и класс А, но имеет другую структуру (с 10 по 14 разряд - идентификатор сети, остальные 16 разрядов - идентификатор хоста). Класс В предназначен для адресации сетей среднего размера и позволяет адресовать 16384 идентификатора сетей и 65 534 хоста.Для адресации сетей Интернета используется класс С, поддерживающий адресацию 2097 152 идентификаторов сетей и только по 254 хоста внутри каждой сети.Адреса класса Е зарезервированы для экспериментального использования.Так как адреса для некоторых классов уже исчерпаны, то вводится новый протокол с расширенной 128-разрядной адресацией (IPng, IPv6). Адреса IPv6 имеют шестнадцатеричный формат. При использовании протокола SLIP IP-адреса назначаются динамически в начале сеанса. Жёсткая система деления адресов на классы была позже заменена на бесклассовую междоменную маршрутизацию (см.
